Birds of a Feather . . .

Recently, Nathan has really gotten into birds. Or at least telling me every time he saw his favorite bird -- a bluejay.

We had been in Hawaii only a day or two when Nathan informed me, "Mom. I have a new favorite bird. It looks cool and it can make lots of different kinds of sounds to communicate." He then proceeded to make all of the sounds for me!

We spent probably about 45 minutes at lunchtime one day on our condo balcony taking pictures of the bird. There is even talk of doing a Great Brain project for school about the bird (he has never done a Great Brain, so this is a huge step)!

It would land on the balcony fairly often, but we were lucky to get a picture this close before it flew off again.

We love the yellow mask around its eyes

After MANY tries, we did get a picture of the bird in flight! It is very distinctive with the white stripes on the wings.

It wasn't until our last night in Hawaii that we learned the bird's name. We were in a gift shop and came across a Birds of Hawaii book . . . it is a Myna bird!

The funny thing is that there is a Hawaiian-style 12 Days of Christmas song. Just like a PARTRIDGE in a pear tree, it is a MYNA BIRD in a papaya tree in the song!

(this is not a papaya tree, but let's just pretend!)
