Seeing Spots

Last week Benjamin presented his Great Brain on Cheetahs to his 1st grade class. He was SO excited to be the first student in the class to complete a Great Brain. As a mom, I love that he has been eager this year to learn something new, and that he wants to do optional programs like this.

As we would read about cheetahs together, we would talk about what we read and then I would write down the notes. Sometimes I wasn't sure how much he was really understanding or retaining. It turns out that I had nothing to worry about -- we practiced the presentation at home and he knew most of it without having to be reminded. At the actual presentation, Benjamin did a fantastic, thorough job and he even added in some facts that we hadn't practiced!

Here are some things that he shared with his class:

* They eat gazelles: they bite the neck and hold on until the animal suffocates
* Cheetahs cannot roar like a lion, but they can purr like a cat. They can also chirp like a bird!

* "Cheetahs have long skinny legs like me" (that was a surprise statement!)
* Female cheetahs live 6-8 years in the wild. So all of the kids in the class would be old if they were a cheetah!

* Baby cheetahs have silver hair that helps them camouflage while their mom is gone hunting
* When a classmate asked if cheetahs eat mountain goats, Benjamin replied, "No. They don't live in the mountains, so they can't. They live in the grasslands."

One requirement was to create something to show what you've learned. Here is his painting of a cheetah chasing a gazelle.

Benjamin will be receiving his medal at the school assembly in January. And he's still thinking about cheetahs: he came home with an If You Give a Mouse a Cookie-type book they made at school; he crossed out all the subjects and replaced them with things like cheetahs and gazelles!

That is so cute! Way to go Benjamin! I wish our schools had something like that!
